The workshop is designed to provide students with a clear understanding of theory, concepts, and practical application of negotiation and mediation practices. During the course, students will maximize their current conflict resolution skills and learn new techniques such as the principles of interest-based negotiation and mediation. The goal of the workshop is to improve students’ ability to negotiate and mediate a dispute at the community level as well as multiparty, complex humanitarian and political situations. Topics to be covered over a weekend workshop are overview of different types of mediation, format and structure of mediation, skills and tools for mediation practice, and participation in mediation simulations.

The 15-hour, one-unit, weekend workshop will follow the standard structure and requirements of all Monterey Institute offered workshops. Bill Monning (CA State Assemblyman, 27th District, and MIIS Professor-on-Leave), and Global Majority members Lejla Mavris and Nicholas Tomb, will conduct 15 hours of face-to-face classroom time with the students, including lecture, several group simulation exercises, and student analyses and discussions.
